My name is Sean Sullivan. I live in Chicago and have been interested in photography most of my life. I started with film, of course, but I don’t have any “magic of the darkroom” stories. My start was instamatic cameras and small prints from the drug store. If I had an overriding style, it was defined by the scarcity of people in my photos.
I returned to photography - sporadically - after finishing school and starting my adult(ish) life. Finding (making) time has always been the biggest challenge. I remember reading in John Shaw’s Nature Photographer’s Complete Guide to Professional Field Techniques about mapping your camera’s exposure nuances by taking rolls and rolls of images with exposure test strips. My two reactions were “that is such a great idea” and “I am never going to do that.”
Digital cameras were the answer. I can experiment and learn from the immediate feedback in ways I never could with film. The birth of E-Bay gave me access to affordable, used, high-end equipment, and a way to get out of my investment - “I can always resell it” became my conscience-clearing mantra.
I created this website as a place to display my photos in a more thoughtful and intentional way than with mass online gallery services. Thanks for visiting and taking the time to explore the website. I hope you enjoy the photos and content, and that you return from time to time.
